6 Things to consider when changing jobs
1. What are you looking to get from a career?
Think about what you’re not getting from your current job and why you want a change. Are you being passed over for promotion? Do you feel undervalued or underpaid?
2. Where would you like to work?
Location is key for many people when considering a new job, so don’t forget to take into account transport options, parking costs, public transport routes and travel time before you begin your search. Bear in mind though that you may need to be flexible on location to get all the other things that are really important to you in your next move so keep an open mind!
3. Organisational culture
Every employer works differently. Do you work better with rigid or loose structure? High or low specialisation? Are you more comfortable in a suit or more of a jeans and T-shirt person? Make sure you have a clear idea of what you are looking for as an employee.
4. Earning potential
It’s important to be realistic when setting financial expectations. A higher salary may be a key motivator for you, but could mean longer working hours, more commitment and heavier workload.
Always take the overall package into account - is there a pension scheme? Private healthcare? A company car? Bonuses or commission? Flexible working patterns? It’s important to weight all of these things up and decide what’s really important to you.
