Meet the Corvus Team - Michael Hewitt | Construction

 27th Feb 2019

Michael has been in recruitment for over 5 years and specialises construction recruitment. Find out in this interview about how Michael got into recruitment to market insights on changing jobs in the construction industry today.

What was your first job?

Barman when I was 16 in my local pub in an old Yorkshire mining village – a character building experience.

How would you describe yourself to someone who’d never met you?

Straight to the point, no nonsense and ethical.

Who do you look up to in business?

Donald Tr… Only joking. I look up to people like Mitch Sullivan. He’s an experienced, no-nonsense recruiter who really knows his stuff. He taught me how to create compelling job adverts and I’ll always owe him for that.

How do you get the best out of your candidates?

I’m honest, up front and I don’t make promises I can’t keep. I expect the same from them in return and most people get to know me, understand how I work and appreciate it.

What has changed in the Construction Industry in the last 5 years?

Well, there’s been lots of change. What I feel is a more interesting question is what will change in the next 5 years? – I think we’ll start to see more off-site construction. It is quicker, cheaper and not affected by the weather. I also believe that we’ll start seeing more automation, we’re already seeing it in the rail sector when it comes to laying new track, I don’t think we are far away from seeing robots brick laying on sites and in off-site modular builds.

What’s the most sought-after skill for a Quantity Surveyor today?

Quantity surveying is often a balancing act between keeping your subbies happy and looking after the bottom line. I feel like the softer skills are becoming more important – relationship building, integrity, expectation setting (communication) etc.

What’s your top tip for today’s Quantity Surveying professionals who are thinking about changing their job?

Well, it’s a buyers’ market out there. You and your skills are in demand. My advice is if you are thinking about going to a new role, make sure you do your research about the company. Speak to people in the know or give me a call and I’ll give you a no-nonsense update about the market. Who’s hiring, who’s good to work for, who to avoid etc.
